It actually turns out that if you Google lice (as I did to be sure of how many legs to give them) that it turns out lice as in headlice and that they are insects &#8211; where as <strong>Woodlice<\/strong> are crustaceans . It did lead to an interesting conversation which lead me to discover that my preschool 4 year old knows that spiders have 8 legs, and are not insects who have 6 legs! (I was suitably impressed).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/dark.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"dark\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/dark-300x245.jpg?resize=300%2C245\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We didn&#8217;t have the right materials at all but I thought it was still worth a try.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">First we coloured in some card black.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/choicechambers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"choicechambers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/choicechambers-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We used an old scone tray and split it into 4 &#8211; 2 dark and 2 light, then we put in a bit of tissue paper and added a drop of water (using a milk bottle lid) &#8211; one in white and one in black. Meaning that the choices were dark and wet, dark and dry, light and wet, and light and dry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We then discussed where we thought the woodlice would be most likely to go<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8211; He said the <strong>dry and light section<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/woodlice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"woodlice\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/woodlice-300x264.jpg?resize=300%2C264\" width=\"300\" height=\"264\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We went out into the garden and talked about where we might find the woodlice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I showed him the dark damp parts of the garden and we collected some out of our compost bin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/tub.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tub\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/tub-232x300.jpg?resize=232%2C300\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We collected them in a dark, wet container.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Note he still thought that they&#8217;d prefer the light and dry section.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chambers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"chambers\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/chambers-300x224.jpg?resize=300%2C224\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I noticed a flaw in my plan that they couldn&#8217;t climb over the ledge (or not likely to) but there was dark and dry Vs light and wet; then dark and wet Vs dry and light. Very discouragingly the first place they went was indeed the dry and light &#8211; eek!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But they soon got moving and both sides preferred the dark sides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/darkandwet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"darkandwet\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/darkandwet-300x148.jpg?resize=300%2C148\" width=\"300\" height=\"148\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">After moving all the woodlice across we made the dark side darker, and did light and dry Vs dark and wet &#8211; and indeed they all went to the dark and wet. So now my son will tell you that woodlice prefer the shade and the rain :O)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/returning.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"returning\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/returning-300x224.jpg?resize=300%2C224\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We made sure the woodlice weren&#8217;t away from their habitat for too long and returned them where we found them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mixingbrown.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"mixingbrown\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/mixingbrown-264x300.jpg?resize=264%2C300\" width=\"264\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We had great fun mixing together different colour paint in order to get brown to make our woodlice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/paintinglice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"paintinglice\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/paintinglice-235x300.jpg?resize=235%2C300\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">My 8 year old has been trying to teach his younger brother that his left hand is the one you can make an L shape with. Unfortunately he was unable to paint this with his broken arm so here you can see my hand. We then glued on antennae, legs and eyes to make a woodlouse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/lforlice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"lforlice\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/lforlice-235x300.jpg?resize=235%2C300\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now my son thought that <strong>LOVE<\/strong> was a much nicer L word<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/love.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"love\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/love-300x224.jpg?resize=300%2C224\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Of course we talk about L things whilst we are out and about<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/loaves.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"loaves\" started simply by drawing black on red paper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/drawingladybirds.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"drawingladybirds\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/drawingladybirds-300x224.jpg?resize=300%2C224\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">There are many ladybird ideas I want to try and adapt but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/pin\/111956740706598732\/\">this<\/a>\u00a0is the main one that inspired me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We painted the black paper (as before) and drew around different sized coins for circles and cut them out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/makingcircles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"makingcircles\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/makingcircles-300x224.jpg?resize=300%2C224\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/blackcircles.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We glued the black spots onto the wings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ladybirdwings.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ladybirdwings\" style=\"text-align: center;\">And then stuck the wings to the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"text-align: center;\">We also did the ladybirds using plates. Like painting ladybirds on toilet rolls, and bee plates.
