The course starts and finishes at the boating lake in the centre of the park, and takes in all parts of the historic park including the river, ornamental gardens, cricket oval and ruins, boating lake and pavilion. We started stretched out on grass and there did feel like there was a slight incline near the start. It\u2019s listed on Google Maps with a pin for Abbey Park parkrun and also at What 3 Words: \/\/\/pools.slower.others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Cowfest?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cowfest is an unofficial meet up of parkrun tourists from the UK parkrun tourists community, and their running buddies. Then asked to uphold certain behaviours (generally just being respectful).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is it Called Cowfest?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Cowell was the first person to reach 100 different parkrun events. Therefore, achieving this became known as a \u201cCowell.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cow was used as an image as it was noticed that half a Cowell was a Cow &#8211; which is also used to signify 50 different events! Then there was then a play on words with a cowl that you wear. The cow design was added to a cowl and hat and then on to clothes (via Flanci) to signify that you are happy to talk. The whole point of the community was to be able to identify others within it and to get attention for parkrun tourism exploits.&nbsp;A percentage of the money from sales goes back into parkrun.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"744\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/pinkoddy.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/moove-it-744x1024.jpg?resize=744%2C1024&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"pinkoddy at Cowfest\" class=\"wp-image-34685\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/54.155.211.39\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/moove-it.jpg?resize=744%2C1024 744w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/54.155.211.39\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/moove-it.jpg?resize=218%2C300 218w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/54.155.211.39\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/moove-it.jpg?resize=768%2C1057 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/54.155.211.39\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/moove-it.jpg?w=1000 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 744px) 100vw, 744px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The criteria for a successful Cowfest location are:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Event Director&#8217;s enthusiasm and core team support to host the event<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course can accommodate larger-than-usual turnout<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can be reached by public transport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plenty of accommodation options locally for those staying over<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adequate parking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adequate toilet facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A cafe that can cope with a larger than normal attendance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A location that lends itself to tourism and exploration is a bonus &#8211; eg a choice of bars and restaurants etc close by for parkrun-eve get-togethers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Experience of Abbey Park parkrun Cowfest East<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Community is what I love most about parkrun. What\u2019s better than meeting up with old friends and new, coming together for a shared love!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meeting People<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This included Koala Monkey-Pig and dad; Jo Yarnall; Lorna, Deb and Andy Airey. Not to mention lots of Flanci Moove-its. The latter of which we had some group photos for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also met Calum Burrell, from Burnage doing his half-Freyne (125 runs), who wore a banana outfit to recognise the 125 train service (the Flying Banana). Plus the date was also exactly 200 years Stockton and Darlington Railway opened, heralding the birth of modern railways. As usual the crowd pulled me along and I am pretty sure I was once again keeping up with the 24 minute pacer. However, when I slowed I didn\u2019t actually see the 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Was nice to see other runners going back over the bridge. Jo even capture a shot of me, and another as I gave up and walked!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My husband wasn\u2019t feeling very well and was going to take it easy, but he was soon passing me, telling me well done. In the end we yo-yoed quite a bit. With me ending up walking at least 4 times. Ranging in times of 16:34-62:02.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>209 Tourists were visiting Abbey Park for the very first time and 17 first timers to parkrun.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First female 20:36 with a new PB (athlete before was unknown). Of which there are a good many. People met up the night before and went to the Globe and some even stayed until the Sunday. We just went for parkrun so headed to The High Cross J D Wetherspoons with lots of the others. Unfortunately not everyone could go as it wasn&#8217;t dog friendly.
